In the beauty and health industry, customer safety should always be top priority. Today we will break down one of the technologies that have revolutionized pedicure safety, pipeless jet systems. In this article, we will explore what pipe-less jets are, how they compare with traditional whirlpool systems and why everyone is going pipe-less.

The Problem

Any professional salon technician knows the dangers of using unclean and unsanitary tools while performing salon services. Before a technician is certified, state boards go to great lengths in educating the dangers of using dirty implements. Pedicure stations are no exception. We have all heard the horror stories of when pedicures have gone horribly wrong. During a routine pedicure, an innocent customer gets an infection leading to potentially serious harm as a result of bacteria from infested tub water. One of the of the most recent examples in the news media is Kate Moss receiving a fungal infection on her toe from getting a cheap pedicure at a random salon [link].

In traditional whirlpool spa tubs, each water jet is connected via flexible PVC pipes to a large water pump located from a central location inside the spa unit. “The problem is found within the design of many tubs. Bathwater does not completely drain from the pipes. Instead, it remains in the damp and dark environment–the perfect breeding ground for bacteria–until the next time someone uses the bath. This water often includes soap film, hair, dead skin, body oil, dirt, and feces. These pathogens then come rushing out of the pipes, into the air and the “clean” bathwater. The person taking the bath is subject to inhaling and ingesting bacteria, along with immersing themselves in a variety of pathogens that can infect open wounds.” [link]

The Solution

Build the water pump into the jet eliminating the pipe where bacteria can breed. This design has proven to be effective and very popular. Not only are pipe-less whirlpool systems are more sanitary, they are usually much quieter when operating, making for a more relaxing spa experience. There are several types brands of pipe-less pumps out on the market today but they all work based on the same principle of placing the motor and water pump directly behind the water jet thereby making it “pipe-less”. Almost all pedicure chairs on the market now are pipe-less.

Set Up

The term “pipeless” as led to some confusion. Many people ask if there needs to be plumbing set up with pipe-less chairs for them to operate. The term pipe-less only refers to the how water is circulated within the tub. As with any spa chair or tub, there needs to be standard water connections available (ie. hot and cold water connections) as well as a drain. The set up is very similar to installing washing machine.

Clearly, if you are in the market to for a pedicure chair, pipeless is the only way to go! Check out our selection of pipeless pedicure chairs.
